Safety

Safety

Safety is our foundation. Every day, we make an effort to create an environment that is healthy, safe and attractive. Heijmans believes that safety must be a top priority in everything we do. We work safely, or we don't work at all. Heijmans distinguishes four different types of safety: occupational safety, environmental safety, constructive safety and psychosocial safety.

Heijmans works hard to promote a proactive safety culture. We want an open culture of people don't look the other way, speak up about any unsafe behaviour and set a good example themselves. Our comprehensive GO! zero accident programme lays the foundation for this. The safety arrangements, rules and standards apply to our own colleagues and to staff of subcontractors and other partners. We constantly draw attention to this in the workplace and on a dedicated website that is available to everyone.

Our results

We have worked with stricter definitions and a new classification for occupational accidents since 2023. We have also established new key performance indicators (KPIs). This allows us to better represent our results and respond with the necessary actions. The Heijmans figures show that the number of lost time accidents remained stable at 72 cases in 2024 compared to 2023. However, the accidents' severity decreased, which meant that our injury frequency rate (IF) fell from 3.1 to 2.3. We also noticed that employees are more likely to report both safe and unsafe situations. This is a positive development, but we should never rest on our laurels – every accident is one too many.
