Heijmans provides sustainable heating for Utrecht’s new city district

Royal Heijmans has been awarded the concession for the Integrated Heating System in the Papendorp Noord and Groenewoud area development. Under this concession, Heijmans will be responsible for the design, construction, and operation of the heating system, which will be executed by Heijmans Energy.

The design, construction, and maintenance activities represent a revenue of approximately €80 million. In addition, Heijmans expects to generate an estimated €200 million in operating income over the duration of the concession. By awarding this heating concession to Heijmans Energy, both parties are committing to a future-proof and sustainable energy solution for one of Utrecht’s largest urban developments.

A vibrant mixed-use district

Over the next decade, Papendorp Noord and Groenewoud will evolve into a vibrant mixed-use district featuring around 3,650 homes, 75,000 m² of office space, a hotel, school, commercial facilities, and a mobility hub. Key principles guiding this development include sustainability, customer satisfaction, security of supply, and affordability.
